the Pollino National Park, situated in between Calabria and Basilicata, in the provinces of Cosenza, Matera and Potenza, with over 182,000 hectares is the largest natural park in Italy. Takes its name from the Massif Pollino.
History
Venne istituito nel 1993 a Rotonda dove ha sede la presidenza, per la necessità di tutelare un paesaggio ed un ambiente naturale di primaria importanza, e soprattutto il Pino loricato (Pinus leucodermis Ant.), che trova qui l'ultimo rifugio (oltre che nei Balcani) contro la devastazione dell'ambiente da parte dell'uomo, ed è stato scelto come simbolo del parco.
Territory
The territory of the park includes all 56 municipalities, 32 of Calabria and Basilicata 24. The municipalities in the territory calabro are: Acquaformosa, Aieta, Carretto of Alexandria, Belvedere Marittimo, Buonvicino, Castrovillari, Calabria Cerchiara, Civita, Francavilla Marittima, Frascineto, Grisolia, Laino Borgo Laino Castello, Lungro, Maierà, Morano Calabro, Mormanno, Mottafollone, Orsomarso, Papasidero, Plataci, Praia a Mare, San Basile, San Donato di Ninea, Sangineto, San Lorenzo Bellizzi, San Sosti, Sant'Agata d'Esaro, Santa Domenica Talao, Saracen, Tortora, Verbicaro. The municipalities in the territory lucano are Calvera, Castelluccio Inferiore Castelluccio Superiore, Castelsaraceno, Castronuovo S. Andrea Carbone, Cersosimo, Chiaromonte, Episcopia, Fardella, Francavilla in Sinni, Latronico, Lauria, Noepoli, Round, San Costantino Albanese, San Giorgio Lucano, San Paolo Albanese San Severino Lucano, Senise, Teana, Terranova di Pollino, Valsinni, Viggianello. Among the religious buildings of note are in the neighborhoods calabro, the monastery of Our Lady of weapons Cerchiara and ruins of monasteries, such as Colloreto in Morano Calabro, and in Basilicata, in the municipality of San Severino Lucano, trovas about 1500 m altitude, in the heart of the Park, the shrine of the Madonna di Pollino, the destination of a religious cult deeply rooted among the people of the place. In the Valley of the Mercure, in the community of Rotonda, were found interesting paleontological finds: Elephas antiquus, Hippopotamus major.
Flora and Fauna
Among the many other tree species present in the park include white spruce, beech, all seven types of Aceri referred to Lobelius maple, black pine, the rate of various species of oaks, chestnuts, and shares higher and more steep slopes there is the Lorica Pino, rare species (in Europe only here and in the Balkans), which fits most difficult habitats, where other very hardy species (beech in primis) are not able to survive. Fabulous blooms of orchids are found mainly in spring, together with those of violets, gentians, bluebells, and in summer, the rare red lily, as well as countless species of medicinal plants and aromatics, among which are the mistress of the culinary, with many species of mind and also all the varieties of thyme, savory, lavender, hyssop, and so on, whose blooms explode at the height of summer in a delicate combination of colors and shades. Not be considered unless the various families of wild berries and wild tree species that produce fruits and berries such as wild apples, the different prunus, the delicious wild strawberries and raspberries quenching of which are scattered paths and the frequent clearings , where the climatic conditions and sunshine will allow fruiting.
The fauna is varied, including species now extinct in other mountainous areas. There are the golden eagle, the black woodpecker, the Chough coral, the Lanner, the capovaccaio, the real kite, the eagle owl, the white owl, the raven, peregrine falcon, driomio, the Apennine wolf, the cat wild deer indigenous to the Orsomarso and otter. It has recently been reintroduced deer.
Activities' Sports
Recommended for those who love the Trekking and Hiking in general, but thanks to the variety of landscapes in this area, we practice different sports. In fact it is a destination not only for climbing enthusiasts, fans of canyoning, rafting, cross-country skiing, caving and mountain biking.
